Η διευκρίνηση αυτή είναι αποκαλυπτική. Τι ακριβώς είναι η πολιτική καταγγελία εκτός από αέρας κοπανιστός. Με απλά λόγια το ΣΥΡΙΖΑ μας γνωστοποιεί από επίσημα χείλη ότι άλλα λέει, άλλα αφήνει να εννοηθούν, και άλλα θα κάνει. Αυτός όμως είναι και ο ορισμός της έννοιας απατεωνιά. Στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση της πολιτικής εξαπάτησης. Στην συνέχεια ακούμε ότι δεν είναι λογικό να διαγράψουμε το χρέος μονομερώς. Πάσχουν λοιπόν τα στελέχη του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ αλλά και πολίτες που το στηρίζουν από παράνοια όταν με σχεδόν θρησκευτικό φανατισμό διαδίδουν ακριβώς τα αντίθετα; Ή είναι μέρος μιας καλά συντονισμένης προσπάθειας με σκοπό την λαϊκιστική παραπλάνηση απεγνωσμένων πολιτών;

Is the market mispricing a Greek Euro-exit?

Hardly a day passes without an estimate of the cost of Greece leaving the Euro. Estimates range from few hundred billions up to a trillion Euros. Yet the market seems to be reacting rather cool about it. For many years (2001-2008) markets were pricing a very small premium on peripheral debt. The famous German Put option (Germany would save everyone) ruled the markets. Was the market mispricing the Greek risk then? Is the market mispricing the Greek exit now? The occasional Euro/$ or Bund reaction to Greek polls is predictable and does not indicate imminent collapse of the system. Why? Here are some of the possibilities:

Greek Bondholder Seeks Payment or Collateral Citing Finnish Deal
2012-05-23 08:16:14.99 GMT

(See EXT4 for more on the euro crisis.)
By John Glover
May 23 (Bloomberg) -- A holder of Greek bonds that weren’t
settled in the biggest-ever debt restructuring said he’ll demand
immediate payment unless the government posts collateral against
his investment.
Rolf Koch, a private investor who says he holds 500,000
Swiss francs ($528,000) of the notes due in July 2013, argued
that he’s entitled to equal treatment with Finland, which made
getting collateral a condition of contributing to Greece’s
second bailout. He wrote to the paying agent, Credit Suisse
Group AG, invoking the bonds’ so-called negative-pledge clause,
according to the text of a letter seen by Bloomberg News.

Investors attempt to accelerate the CHF bond

It seems that investors holding the 530million of the CHF Greek bond (CH0021839524) are asking the Principal Paying Agent (CSFB) to accelerate the bond based on the Negative pledge clause.
To remind you, this bond was part of the PSI but bondholders rejected the PSI overwhelmingly.
If the paying Agent accepts the argument of the investors then Greece has to apply the same guarantees it has given to the Finnish government. If not, then the bonds would have to be paid in 30 days instead of July 2013. Failing this it would be an event of Default and possibly trigger the remaining outstanding Foreign Law Greek bonds.

The current action to accelerate the bond is based on the negative pledge:

Greek Bank Marathon. European Deposit Guarantee.

Hardly a day passes without another article appearing on how Greece is going to collapse and the trigger for it is going to be a Bank run. This is how the simple scenario goes. Depositors withdraw their cash either physically or by electronic transfer abroad; the private banks collapse and Greece exits the Euro. Others say that a bank run on deposits may be a wakeup call to all those who want to vote for the anti-European parties and so it may be a good thing after all. Here we argue that a traditional bank run would be very hard to materialize in Greece or any other European country as long as the ECB supports the NCB.

The Drachma path

Once more the scenarios of a possible Greek exit from the Eurozone are in fashion. We also see scenarios of a Greek exit from the EU. Most media and commentators replicate the mutterings of European or Greek or other investment experts. In this mess the conspiracy theories abound while some of the Greeks prepare for the day after others do not believe that it is possible.
Today’s Situation
The Greek state has gone bust after years of financial mismanagement, corruption and nepotism that created a state economy of soviet proportions. The European partners rushed to Greece’s help and gave loans albeit with strict conditionality. However, they made these loans to the people and the parties that were responsible for the mess in the first place. It was like West Germany giving money to Eric Honecker in order to disband his Stasi, restructure East Germany and prepare it for unification. As it happens the people objected to this idea. Unfortunately, this objection took the form of refusing the European help and path. In other words many identify Europe and in particular Germany as the culprit.
Populist politicians are not a rare species in Greek politics. In fact they form the overwhelming majority. The lack of rational debate that was promoted by most political parties finally paid off. No-one can easily discern fantasy from reality. Conspiracy theories have displaced common sense. Many voters wanting to punish the politicians responsible for this and possibly their own selves for voting for them all these years cast their vote to the suicidal left and extreme right (including fascists). Europe responded to this with a simple proposition “Either in with our terms or out”.

Greece in Europe?

Greece’s European Union history is long and varied. Greece came out of the WWII on the side of the winners. However, this came at a heavy cost. Total loss of human life amounted to around 4-11% of the total population. For comparison French losses were 1.4%, Italian 1%, and British 1%. The Greek numbers are comparable to those of Germany 8-10% and USSR of 13.5%.
The economy was devastated not least because of one of the highest hyperinflations caused by the Nazi occupation. As if this was not enough, the Greeks engage into a destructive civil war between the hardline communists and British backed nationalist. Unknown to most communists at the time, Stalin had given Greece to the West in a deal with Churchill. Thus the soviet communist paradise was lost for the Greeks but remained as a myth in the collective conscience. In fact, the actions of the later Greek government instead of healing the wounds drove deeper the social and economic division.

A Memorandum renegotiation meeting

Meeting Participants:
Frau Merkel: Chancellor of Deutschland,
Herr Tsipras: PM of the free Greeks and leader of the grand left coalition
Herr Hollande: President of the French Republic
Herr Rajoy: PM of the Spain
Minutes of the meeting:
Mr Tsipras: Hello Frau Merkel. My people have instructed me to enter into negotiations with our esteemed European partners with a view to ease the burden of the anti-social, despicable and barbarous Memorandum of Understanding that our previous corrupt capitalist government has signed.
Frau Merkel: Hello Herr Tsipras. Europe is based on the principles of solidarity, equality, justice and freedom of expression and thought. I noticed that Greece’s relationship with the rest of Europe is going through a rough time. As a trained chemist I wish to remedy the chemistry between our peoples and move Europe forward.

Greece pays the Yen Bond Coupon.

No word yet on whether this means that they are going to pay the May12.

Would Greece pay today's Coupon?

Government or no government the Hellenic Republic would have to decide today whether to pay a coupon to the hold out owners of XS0071095045. It is not much, just 4.4million. Will they pay or not? Of course there is a grace period but failing to give an adequate explanation for the delay may be an early indication for the big one that is coming on the 15th May (434million). Who will decide? The Greeks or the Europeans? Finding 434million when the whole deal with the Troika (Memorandum) is under threat may be difficult.

Then you also have the bond that the ECB holds which is 3.3billion. The Greek government is expecting the money by the 10th of May in order to pay this on the 18th of May. Will the EU send the cash? Probably yes. What is more problematic is the next instalment in June.

How would the markets and Europe react to a non-payment of either today's coupon or even of the May 12 bond? Well, if the markets fail to react to a non-payment then this may be taken as a sign that Greek risk is decoupling from the rest of Europe and that the exit path from Euro is a real possibility.

Reality Check with no Cheque (part 2)

  •  Chances of printing money in Europe increase
  •  Euro possibly down. Recover later
  •  Greece’s chances of going it alone increase significantly. A possible exit from Europe not just Eurozone is a possibility.
Forming a government in Greece would be a Herculean task. Most European governments hoped that PASOK and ND the two parties that more or less voted for the Troika bailout would master a majority. They didn’t. Together they have 149 seats when a minimum of 151 are needed, so they would need either defections or a third party to join them. If all attempts to make government fail then elections would be held again soon, possibly in 4-5 weeks.
Given the rise in anti-European feeling, Europe and the EU would have to decide if it is optimal to continue with their financial support or let Greece go. Supporting the Greek state is going to become very awkward for Europe’s politicians if the Greeks themselves do not want to be helped. Many European governments may decide that it is time for Europe to call Greece’s bluff. Maybe they would think, it is time for the masks to be removed. The reality check would come when the next European cheque does not arrive. The Greek state still needs money to pay salaries and pensions and unless they pay them in philatelic stamps, like they did during the war, they would need either to print a new Drachma or pay them in IOU Greek bonds or try other innovative but painful solutions.

Greece: Reality Check with no Cheque

As results are coming in it look very hard for the two traditional parties PASOK and ND to form a stable and durable government. Few observations are in order:

ND 19%: The so far results indicate a huge defeat for Mr Samaras who insisted in having the elections. Although it maybe hard to be removed from the leadership of the party his time must be numbered.

SYRIZA 16%: The second party ahead of PASOK. One of the major winners of the night. It would be interesting to see if they would change their anti-european rhetoric now that they are a major force in Greek politics

PASOK 13%: Mr Venizelos failed to rejuvenate the fate of his party and although he is a powerful personality his future is also in doubt.

Independent Greeks: By far in my opinion the biggest winners of the night. Out of nowhere they are getting close to 10.5%. A right wing party that drew most of their votes from ND.

Golden dawn: This is the far right-fascist party. A very anti-everything party that for the first time enters the parliament with a whopping 7%.

Communist Party: One of the losers of the night as they failed to gain significantly from the disgruntled left vote.

It looks as if the smaller liberal parties are not getting enough votes to enter the parliament. The Greens are on the border line while DRASI (liberal) and DHSY etc have an uphill battle.

CONCULSION

One has to wonder how a European politician can justify paying taxpayers money to the Greeks when it looks that the Greeks do not want to be recipients of this aid. The reality check may come sooner rather than later once Greek politicians attempt to find money to pay salaries.
Greek banks have not been recapitalised and asking for the money to be released may be hard.
It also looks increasingly possible that there may be another election soon.

Greek Elections, Foreign Greek Bonds

On Sunday 6th of May the French and the Greek people would have a chance to vote for the first time since the debt crisis erupted in Europe. For France we already know the results of the first round and it looks that Sarkozy is toast. Greece on the other hand is a different story.  The two main parties that have governed non-stop Greece since 1974, the centre-left PASOK and the center-right ND, are wounded but are not dead. In fact, despite polls showing them commanding less than 40% of the electorate, chances are that the two parties would survive the onslaught and form a coalition government. Let’s look at the scenarios:
